Does your computer have to be on all the time for Vonage to work?

June 15th, 2010

Q:  Does your computer have to be on all the time for Vonage to work?

A: No, your computer doesn’t need to be on at all for Vonage to work.  Vonage operates completely separately from your computer, unlike services such as Magic Jack and Skype that require you to use a computer to make calls.

With Vonage, you use your existing phone (cordless or with a cord) to make and receive calls just like you would with a standard land line phone service.  The call quality is the same – the only difference is how much money you’ll be saving!  To learn more about Vonage and how it works, see our “How Vonage Works” section.

Do I need to have a land line to use Vonage?

June 15th, 2010

Q:  Do I need to have a land line to use Vonage?

A: No, you don’t, because Vonage doesn’t use or need a standard phone land line.  Instead, Vonage uses VoIP, or “Voice Over IP” technology, which sends voice signals over a high speed internet connection.  Call quality is great, and callers won’t notice a difference between Vonage and regular phone service.

To use Vonage you will need the following:

1. A high speed internet connection (cable or DSL):  Vonage does not provide this service, but you can easily sign up with any service provider in your area.
2. Touch tone phone:  You can use the phone you already have.  Vonage supports both cordless and corded phones.
3. Vonage Phone Adapter:  Vonage will mail this to you, it’s free of charge with a one-year agreement to either the Vonage World or the Vonage Lite plans.  Users are charged for the adapter if they select other plans, such as Basic 500.

To learn more about how Vonage works, see our “How Vonage Works” section.

Right now Vonage is running several great specials, including Vonage World.  It’s a smart time to take advantage of the savings and get yourself some Vonage!

Can I hook up Vonage myself or do I need to have a technician do it?

Q:  Can I hook up Vonage myself or do I need to have a technician do it?

A: Vonage is a very DIY service, so it’s easy to hook it up yourself.  You won’t need a technician.  Basically, you’ll need a high speed internet connection (Cable or DSL), a phone and the Vonage phone adapter that you’ll be sent in the mail.

The phone adapter comes in a stylish kit.  Inside is the adapter and a fully illustrated, fold-out “Quick Start Guide”.  The instructions are simple and easy to follow.  It should take about 15 minutes to set up and get going.  To learn more about the adapter, see our Vonage phone adapter section.
