How does 911 work with Vonage?

The following is an actual user submitted question:

Q:  How does 911 work with Vonage?

A: There are some differences between traditional 911 and Vonage’s 911 service.  With traditional 911 services, your call is sent directly to the nearest emergency response center.  If you have a traditional 911 service with enhanced 911 (available in most locations), your call back number and address are visible to the emergency response center call-taker.

With Vonage’s 9-1-1 service, your call is sent to a national emergency call center.  Your call back number and address aren’t shown, but the call center operator will confirm your location information.  Then they will transfer your 9-1-1 call to the emergency response center nearest your location. It’s important that you confirm your address and call-back number with the operator before hanging up.  Do not hang up unless told directly to do so and if you’re disconnected dial 9-1-1 again.  Additionally, if there is a power or broadband outage then the Vonage service won’t work and you won’t be able to dial 911.

If you have a serious health condition or are caring for someone who does you should be aware of the differences between traditional 911 and Vonage’s 911 service.  However, for most people this won’t be much of an issue.  If you have additional questions, please call Vonage toll-free at 888-692-8076.
